Mercury optimax fuel rail problems
Seller: omcswfl 4, This diaphram fits both the air and fuel regulator on all of the Optimax 3. Additionally, it is the same diaphram used for the fuel diaphram on the Optimax 2. This is the latest version from Mercury and they are identifiable by their purple color. The previous models were either green or brown in color. This diaphram is used in either regulator fuel or air on the port side fuel rail for the 3.
Most dealers tell customers they are pubg voice chat not working reddit available separately and the entire fuel rail needs to be replaced. That is no longer true, and they can be purchased individually without buying the entire fuel rail kit.
The diaphram for sale is not the tracker diaphram that is installed in the starboard fuel rail on either the 2. A bad Air Compressor head seal can force water into the fuel rails. Flushing your Optimax with fresh water after every use will drastically reduce the chance of water getting into your fuel rails.
Mercury Optimax Fuel Rail AIR and FUEL REGULATOR DIAPHRAM / Diaphragm
There are a few different types of Fuel Rails depending on your engine serial number. All fuel rails come with the Fuel Injectors and the Pressure Regulators and Tracker Valves preinstalled at the factory. In the event that you have a faulty Pressure Regulator mounted on the Port fuel railyou will have to by a new fuel rail. Mercury no longer sells the Pressure Regulators as a replacement item. Mercury used to sell the fuel rails separately.
For most models, if you try to purchase the Stb rail the part number will be NLA no longer available and Mercury will tell you to purchase another part number such as T We can help make sure that you order the correct rail s.
Simply email us your engine serial number and we will check for the latest rail purchase options, price and availability. Your style of rail may differ in design and price. We have been cleaning and flow testing Optimax air injectors and fuel injectors for many years. In doing so we have saved our customers thousand of dollars.
Our fuel injector cleaning service and flow testing is used by many dealers. Maintenance and fuel related issues are the main cause for engine performance problems on the Optimax engines. Ethanol is h ygroscopic and draws water. The combination of water and ethanol damage some fuel lines and cause the internals of both the air and fuel injector to have a residue buildup Residue buildup and corrosion of the aluminum fuel rails Damaged fuel lines becomes soft and collapse causing fuel flow restrictions.
Bad Tracker Valve Bad Fuel Pressure regulator Bad or leaking Schrader valves The byproduct of phase separation has a devastating affect on both the air and fuel injectors and will ruin the fuel pump very quickly. Clogged fuel injectors due to dirt and phase separation.
The Optimax air and fuel injection system is fairly complicated. Not only does it have to supply the exact amount of metered air and fuel but it also has to supply the correct amount of oil to lubricate both bearings and cylinder walls.
All three these systems are separate but has to work together to achieve optimum engine performance. A belt driven air compressor supply air to the lower section of the fuel rail. Better known as the air rail. Fuel is supplied via the top part of the same rail. The fuel injectors are situated directly above the air injectors. Fuel is injected into the air injector. The fuel air mixture is then injected directly into the combustion chamber where it is ignited at a specific timing event to produce optimum power.
Dirt in either the air or the fuel system can reap havoc and it is therefore important to keep the system as clean as possible. There is a 10 Psi difference between the fuel rail pressure and the air rail pressure. This pressure difference is maintained. If this pressure difference is not maintained you can expect poor engine performance and sometimes the engine will not run at all. A failed Mercury Optimax air compressor will send debris to the air injectors.
This debris can limit the operation of these injectors and cause all kind of performance issue. It is therefore recommended that you have the Optimax air and fuel injectors at least flow tested and if needed cleaned in the event of an air compressor failure. Our News Latest Popular All News We can Repair regulator diaphragms air fuel valve diaphragms as well as the tracker valve diaphragms not the same as the regulator.Originally introduced inthe Optimax motor was made and sold untildepending on your location the motors were sold under both the Mercury and Mariner names.
The motors were made from a 1. This article will specifically focus on the Optimax fuel system, and the differences between the Optimax fuel system, and more conventional fuel systems.
The Mercury Optimax motor is very different from conventional 2-strokes, and the motors previously offered by Mercury and Mariner.
Rather than injecting fuel into the crankcase like the previous 2-stroke motors offered, this motor uses a combination of high pressure fuel and high pressure air to inject an atomized mixture of gas directly into the combustion chamber.
The high pressure fuel is provided by a series of 3 fuel pumps, a pulse operated lift pump and 2 electric pumps inside the VST or vapor separating tank. From there the fuel flows to the fuel rail where it is cooled by sea water and delivered to the fuel injectors. A fuel pressure regulator is installed on the fuel rail to relieve excess pressure, the fuel that is let out by this regulator circulates back into the VST tank.
This part of the Optimax operates very similarly to most modern fuel injection systems. Another set of injectors called direct injectors are located on the other side of the fuel rail, between it and the cylinder head. These injectors are fed pressurized air from the belt driven air compressor on top of the motor. The air compressor is ran off of the flywheel, as well as the alternator, and is fed cooling water as well as oil for lubrication.
The air side of the fuel rail is regulated at 10 - 15 psi less pressure than the fuel side, this specification depends on the exact model, you will see the pressure specs listed below. The fuel pressure regulator is held closed with a spring that requires 10 psi to force the diaphragm off of the diaphragm seat. The backside of the diaphragm is fed with regulated air rail pressure, as the air rail pressure increases, the fuel pressure needed to open the regulator increases equally.
The air pressure is less than the fuel, so that the fuel can overcome the air pressure and be properly mixed when injected into the cylinders. Now that the fuel and air has been mixed the direct injectors spray the mixture directly from the cylinder head into the cylinder.
The direct injectors have a cone shaped spray pattern which allows the mixture to atomize very well, even under high cylinder pressures.
Mercury states that the atomized fuel droplets are about 10 microns in size. All of these things in combination are what make the Mercury Optimax fuel efficient and powerful. The better the atomization, the more efficiently fuel can burn, thus giving exceptional power and fuel economy. In the next section you will see pictures of the following typical Mercury Optimax fuel systems:.
FUEL REGULATOR REPAIR FOR OPTIMAX MOTORS
Inline 3 Cylinder 1. As with any new technology advancements, they did have their bugs originally, but they were quickly sorted out by Mercury. It is not uncommon to see these motors reach a few thousand hours with little repairs. That being said they are rather complex motors and have potential to give you grief if they are not maintained properly.
Clogged or inoperative fuel injectors or direct injectors can cause similar issues along with the potential for creating a lean condition which could cause premature wear or engine damage. An air compressor failure would not only leave you stranded out on the water, but can also contaminate the fuel rail and DFI injectors.
Leaking Teflon carbon seals on the direct air injectors can cause a low compression reading, possibly tricking you into thinking that you have scored cylinder walls.
Oil lines cracking or an oil pump failing could also spell and early end to your motor. Many of these issues can be tough to find or catch before they become a problem, and DIY mechanics often overlook such items and cost you money. These reasons and more are why we always recommend servicing and repairing your Optimax at a Mercury Marine Certified repair center or dealer. Regular fuel system maintenance and checking all of the above items is key to letting your Optimax outboard live a long life.
We can help you by performing a full fuel rail and injector cleaning. You send us your complete fuel rail or rails including both the air and fuel injectors, and we will disassemble them and ultrasonically clean everything back to new.Use our Service to save you money!

Maybe the dumb question of the day but when replacing rails due to diaphram failure, which diaphrams are we talking about.
I have been told the starboard rail has issues and sometimes they must be replaced. New to the Optimax motors and any help would be appreciated. Thanks Rock. The strb rail has the tracker valve witch keeps the differential of 10 psi In The stock fishing motors or 15 psi on the pro xs and race motors.
This diaphragm is not avalible and the rail set will have to be replaced. Most of the time u will see a flooded motor, lots of raw fuel coming out of the gearcase. Or u will see fuel injectors leaking and causing fuel in the air side of the rail. This will cause a Rich running motor. U can replace the tracker valve that's the rail with only one silver bump on it but the side with two silver bump is regulators fuel and air not available through mercury but can be repaired I have done a few in the past.
If u think your having a problem u can take them apart and look at diaphragm and see if there ripped regulator side has some heavy spring in them be careful.
Green diaphragm were the ones giving most of the troubles purple was the later better ones. I believe you can now get all the diaphragms from Pro Marine. The Starboard side rail is easy. The port side is a little challenging. The springs under the caps on the port side are very large.
You can also use a large c-clamp or valve spring compressor to move the cap down still using the longer screws as guides. Once its down, replace one screw at a time with the proper screw.
Its the usual suspect. Mine was not ripped but cruddy. Thanks for the replies. Mother Mercury never ceases to amaze me as I was told the diaphrams were not available, only the rail assembly. I knew of the 3 diaphrams in the manual but after seeing they were not crimped or riveted in place I figured there was another somewhere else. Guess not.
I now understand the reason and current options and really appreciate the help. I'm not sure that pro sells the diaphragm, but I know you can send them the fuel rails and they will replace the diaphragm, I think the last one I did a year ago was ish, was way cheaper then replacing the fuel rails.
I needed I should have a few repaired diaphragm ready to go have to look through my optimax stuff I try to have them on hand. That is the same thing I was told. As it turned out all 3 diaphrams are good. I also got more info on the motor today and tomorrow will begin to explore the fuel system and learn to understand dfi motors. Pulled the plugs and 5 of the 6 are covered in black soot. Thanks again for everyones help.
